This page contains information on Dilute Red Miniature Pinschers

Dilute Red aka Tan Dilute Red MinPins exhibit the same solid color as the typically accepted Red MinPin. The Dilution gene causes the Red hair to dilute to a Cream-red. Some breeders refer to the dilute red color as tan because of the creamy shade of red that is produced by the dilution. Tan is used much like a "dilute black & rust" is referred to as a blue & rust. The dilution factor also changes the Red MinPin's black features (lips, nose, eye rims, foot pads) to appear dark gray like that of a Blue & Rust MinPin. The dilution will also be seen in the Stag MinPin, in that the Black intermingled hair (black sabling) of the typical Stag Red MinPin willl appear as gray intermingled hair instead of black. Dilute Red MinPins are not currently shown in any known country's conformation competition. CH Windamir's Sahara B This same dilution factor is seen, accepted and shown in the Chihuahua, Pomeranian and German Pinscher (GP fanciers refer to this color as an Isabella GP).

If the chocolate factor is also present when combined with the dilution factor the combination of genetics changes the Red MinPin's black features (lips, nose, eye rims, foot pads) to appear self colored like that of a Fawn & Rust MinPin. The dilution chocolate combination will also be seen in the Stag MinPin, in that the Black intermingled hair (black sabling) of the typical Stag Red MinPin will appear as fawn intermingled hair instead of black. This same dilution factor is seen, accepted and shown most noteably in the Chihuahua.

Genetics isn’t scary, unless math scares you. Genetics is pretty much elementary math & science. Dog breeders are quasi hobby scientists. Coat color inheritance is fairly easy to follow once you get the gist of it. There is a great book on coat color genetics “The Inheritance of Coat Colors in Dogs”, by Clarence Cook Little. The book is out of print, so be prepared to pay “rare book” prices. The book makes a wonderful addition to any dog breeder's library. The gene that causes Red or Stag Red mutation is the
The “A” Locus (Agouti Yellow)
The A locus produces patterns of black and yellow.
Ay = Sable (MinPinners call this Stag Red) Tan -to- Mahongany Red with varying degrees of an intermingling black hairs
at = Black & Tan (MinPinners call this Black & Rust) a black dog with typical “Doberman” patterning.

The “E” Locus (Extension)
The E locus produces clear tan/fawn/red.
E = normal pigmentation – not red
e = recessive red - clear red.

There are three "genetic" types of Red MinPins in the show ring today and they all look basically the same, Tannish-Red solid colored dogs with a black nose.
Ay Ay = dominant Red (Stag Red), does not produce Black & Rust.
Ay at = Red (Stag Red), carrying the recessive for Black & Rust (can produce Black & Rust offspring).
ee = Recessive Red, can produce Black & Rust if bred with a Black & Rust.

at at = causes the solid red dog to project a Black & Rust patterned coat.

The B and b of the Liver/Chocolate locus and the D and d of the Blue dilution locus affect the black pigment of the Reds in the same manner as they affect the Black & Rust.
