Fawn MinPins exhibit a bi-color pattern of sharply defined Fawn and Rust. The Dilution gene cause shades of Fawn (Isabella), a simmering Silvery-Chocolate or Tannish-Gray hair to be exhibited where the Chocolate hair is normally seen on a Chocolate and Rust dog. They are registered as "Fawn & Rust" or "Fawn & Tan" in the AKC color selection chart. http://www.akc.org/registration/colormarkings.cfm .
Fawn & Rust coated MinPins are eligible to be shown in conformation competition in the United Kennel Club, UKC, as of May 1, 2008.
The color needs not be feared or misunderstood. Fawn & Rust is a naturally occuring color in the Miniature Pinscher that has existed since the MinPin was first recorded in the Pinscher Schnauzer Klub in 1895 in Germany. This same dilution factor is seen, accepted and shown in the Fawn & Rust Doberman Pinscher. There are lovely examples of quality Fawn Dobermans and if bred responsibly the same success could be enjoyed by the Fawn MinPin.

Genetics isn’t scary, unless math scares you. Genetics is pretty much elementary math & science. Dog breeders are quasi hobby scientists. Coat color inheritance is fairly easy to follow once you get the gist of it. There is a great book on coat color genetics “The Inheritance of Coat Colors in Dogs”, by Clarence Cook Little. The book is out of print, so be prepared to pay “rare book” prices. The book makes a wonderful addition to any dog breeder's library. In MinPins the b locus replaces the black pigment of our Black & Rust MinPins with a Chocolate & Rust coloration.
The “B” Locus (Liver locus)
The B locus produces the Chocolate shading to the skin and hair pigment.
B = normal dark pigmentation, normal dark eye
b = chocolate colored coat, eye rims & nose … and lightens the eye iris color.
