Blue & Rust MinPin

Blue & Rust MinPins exhibit a bi-color pattern of sharply defined Blue and Rust. The Dilution gene cause shades of Gray hair to be exhibited where the Black is normally seen on a Black and Rust dog. While Blue coated MinPins are not currently shown in the AKC, the color IS acceptable and exhibited in conformation competition in the UK, Australia, New Zealand AND in the U.S.A. in the United Kennel Club. The color needs not be feared, maligned or misunderstood. Blue & Rust is a naturally occuring color in the Miniature Pinscher that has existed long BEFORE the MinPin was first registered in Europe by the Pinscher Schnauzer Klub in 1895 in Germany. CH Zenodobe's Arius In fact the Blue & Rust was one of the PREFERRED colors in the first written breed standards. This same dilution factor is seen, accepted and shown in the German Pinscher, Doberman Pinscher and other breeds. Given the chance, the Blue Miniature Pinscher could enjoy some of the same success in the show ring.

There is no need to leave the Blues as outcasts maligned and languishing in bred-for-color puppy farms. The puppy farmers are quite happy that the show breeders don't breed them, makes more profit for them selling their pathetic unhealthy puppies of questionable heritage. Why leave the reputable breeders "in the closet" for fancying the color, afraid of being labeled "unscrupulous" for openly breeding a disqualification?

Despite the negative press of breeding a DQ, there are a few dedicated breeders who work to maintain quality Blue MinPins. The Blue was only removed temporarily until the quality improved. With the work of a handful of breeders, the quality has improved. In the hands of the conscientious breeders who can feel free breed them openly, this color could flourish with fine examples of the breed. Blue can be incorporated or avoided as easily as Chocolate can be added or avoided in a breeding program. Breeders who do not like the color, may simply avoid the color. The "Red & Black only" fanciers would not be impacted by affording "Red, Black & Blue" fanciers their proper place of legitimacy. Only with the educated show breeders' dedication will this color continue to improve. They should be studied & improved upon for the future.

Genetics isn’t scary, unless math scares you. Genetics is pretty much elementary math & science. Dog breeders are quasi hobby scientists. Coat color inheritance is fairly easy to follow once you get the gist of it. There is a great book on coat color genetics “The Inheritance of Coat Colors in Dogs”, by Clarence Cook Little. The book is out of print, so be prepared to pay “rare book” prices. The book makes a wonderful addition to any dog breeder's library. There is also is a great website for learning about the Loci & what they do to affect the coat color http://www.tenset.co.uk/doggen/indexus.html. Additionally there is our own amateur website that pertains specifically to Miniature Pinscher coat color inheritance http://www.OperationBluePrints.com/ColorInheritance/

The gene that causes Blue Dilution is the
The “D” Locus (Blue Dilution locus)
The D locus produces the Blue shading to the skin and hair pigment.
D = normal dark pigmentation, normal dark eye
d = diluted blue-gray coat, eye rims & nose … and lightens the eye iris color.

In MinPins the d locus replaces the black pigment of our Black & Rust MinPins with a Blue & Rust coloration.

DD = BlackMinPin a normal Black & Rust dog that does NOT produce Blue offspring

Predicting Blue & Rust Coat Color Inheritance

Upper case letters represent Dominant genes. Lower case letters represent recessive genes. D (not dilute) is dominant over the recessive d (dilute). Genes are in pairs DD (dominant), Dd (dominant carrying a recessive) or dd (recessive) ... like that.

Each parent contributes 1 of their own genes to the offspring. Which gene the offspring gets from the parent? ... is up to Mother Nature. Understanding them helps us move the odds into our favor. With knowledge, we are better prepared to make an educated guess according to the “odds” “law of averages”.

If the sire is DD, he can give either the 1st D or the 2nd D to his offspring.
If the sire is Dd, he can give either the D or the d to his offspring.
If the sire is dd, he can give either the 1st d or the 2nd d to his offspring.

A copy of 1 of the sire’s genes matches with a gene from the Dam at conception.
